LETTUCE IN ALERT
Sep 16 2004

LETTUCE has been found to contain pesticides almost 14 times the safe limit, reveals a report published yesterday. One pre-packed salad had six different chemicals. And a variety of Spanish lettuce had dangerously high levels of the insecticide methamidophos, which is banned in the UK.

Tests by the Government's Pesticide Residue Committee also found "unacceptable" amounts of pesticides in some farmed salmon, trout and baby food. Dr Ian Brown said: "Action has been taken to inform suppliers. It is encouraging that more than 80 per cent tested did not contain pesticides exceeding the limits.""
