We would like to let you know that Asthma Facts, Second Edition, the second report on asthma morbidity and mortality in New York City developed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), is available online at www.nyc.gov/health/asthma. The data presented in this report are intended to update the 1999 edition of Asthma Facts and offer a valuable perspective on the toll asthma exacts in New York City. This report provides information on asthma deaths and hospitalizations in New York City residents as well as prevalence among adults and 4-5 year old children and identifies:

 

· demographic distributions of asthma hospitalization, mortality and prevalence rates;

· boroughs and/or specific neighborhoods with high rates for asthma hospitalization and mortality and high proportions of  school children and adults with asthma;

· changes in asthma hospitalization and mortality rates over time;

· comparisons between New York City and the rest of the country in terms of asthma morbidity, mortality and adult asthma prevalence;

· average lengths of stay for asthma hospitalizations; and

· charges for asthma hospitalizations.
