CHEC has launched First Steps, a twelve-month, web-based program designed to educate new parents about environmental health risks to their newborn in the home. Once enrolled, users receive free monthly emails, which discuss environmental threats to children, and simple steps parents can take to reduce these risks. Dr. Harvey Karp, CHEC Board member and practicing pediatrician, authored the content that is tied to the developmental stage of the infant. Content currently includes the following issues: - Indoor air quality - Baby bottles, pacifiers and phthalates - Water - Pesticides in food - Pest control - PVC toys - Sandboxes, playground sets and CCA - Lead paint - Insect repellant and sunscreen, - Radon, wood stoves and fireplaces - Cleaners - Solvents - Carpeting Participation in the First Steps program is simple and free.
